I think the common problem with a lot of personal development is they always have this mentality of what they can get. Personal development books are always centered around this goal-setting mentality.

We are taught to set goals and so on. Financial goals and material goals are among them.

However, based upon my experience that is actually a bad way.

This is because if we are constantly thinking about what we can take out, we come from a low level mentality. If we are constantly thinking about what we want. Like a new car or gadget, we will  fail or be very frustrated even if we get it.

This is because if we always focus on what we want, we will want more things. This is normal. That’s why most goal-setting fail in the long term if it focuses on what you want.

I have a different idea. Why don’t we focus instead on what can you give?

I realize that when I come from that mindset, I am able to be happier. I see myself as a provider. I come from an abundance mindset. I feel like I am giving instead of receiving.

I don’t feel like I need anything. I feel rich giving. I feel happy giving.

I think we all need to come from that place of giving if we are to really find happiness in the long term.

Question of the day: What can I give the world? What unique talents do I have to offer.

p.s. focus on giving. not taking.  you’ll be happier.

We all have many angels around us. We just don’t realize it.

Perhaps for many of us, we have too many things going around us that we don’t realize that. For many of us, we are too focused on what we want and on those things we don’t have that we don’t realize that we have many great things already going on for us.

It is only those times of troubles and when we start losing things that we recognize the divinity of things. It is only when we are down that we realize how we have taken so many things for granted.

There are angels everywhere.

I look around and often ask myself why am I not doing things or not having that. I realize that I have been focusing too much on what I don’t have that I neglect what are those things that I have already. My mind becomes too focused on those things that I want and those things I don’t have. It is an easy tendency to get into. It may be the money I am not making, or the gadget that I have yet to own.

When I hit the moments of low, then only I realize how much I take for granted many things. The angels are the people like my mum who cooks a simple breakfast, my dad who is so supportive of what I am doing and my sister who just tells me a lame joke to make my day.

Angels can also be that pedestrian who gave u a smile on the street to remind me I am worthy of a smile. It reminds me to return it to someone in need.

It may be the blogger who has just wrote an inspiring article to share.

It may be the friend who called/SMS me to ask how am I doing.

It may be the man at the coffee shop who served me a nice cup of tea, smilingly and sharing a light joke.

It may be the friend I had lunch with the past day.

I realize there are so many angels around me. We all do.

What we need is just a transformational shift in mentality. From focusing on what we want and don’t have to what we already got. It seems like what we already got is what we need.

Angels are around you. Acknowledge them.

I have been training for a 100km run for the past 2 months or so. I really learned something valuable about embracing the “laziness” in us. There are times where I just feel like totally not running. Or in any case, just don’t feel like doing anything.

It is only normal that we all go through such situations time and time again. We feel as if we don’t feel like working or don’t feel like getting up of bed. We just want to laze around and just do nothing.

What do you do then ?

The normal tendency in almost all of us is just to force ourselves out of bed or force ourselves to work. We force ourselves to do something even if a part of us don’t feel like doing it at all. This forcing creates tension in ourselves. It makes us feel forceful. You feel confused and it feel like there is a big resistance in yourself when you force it. It makes you feel very uncomfortable.

We are all so used to doing this. I was around the same as well until recently when I realized that doing this made me extremely unhappy. Even though I have done something (be it running, working etc), if I don’t do it fully with my heart, the work seems draggy and unfulfilling.

Then what is the way then ?

I realized that we all have two distinct energies within ourselves. One is the “doing” energy and the other, the “being” energy.

The doing energy involves us putting in effort. It means that the body wants to move or wants to be doing something.

The being energy wants to just be still, or in our case, to be lazy.

We often treat the being energy as bad. We think that being lazy is a sign that we are not being a valuable person. We are so used to working and moving. Most of us have suppressed this “being” energy within ourselves. We force ourselves to do many things.

Our society is entrenched with “doing” energy. Look around and you see people constantly on the move. We think that constant action is the way of life. We need to progress for our material wealth and so on. Our entrenchment with the doing energy is apparent with people getting bored the moment they sit down. They just can’t seem to “be”. They must always be doing something. Always be stimulated.

We need to embrace laziness as a value. There would be times where we just don’t feel like doing something. Don’t push that feeling away. Just embrace the laziness that we have in the moment. It will do away.

Laziness is also a great tool. It is because of laziness that technology was created. Human beings become lazy to walk, so they created cars. Human beings become lazy to cook, so they invented faster gadgets. All human technology centers around laziness, although human beings like to say it is for “convenience.”

When we embrace laziness, we realize there is a faster way to things. Most of us are too busy doing that we don’t just be. Being allows us to work more productively when we are “doing”.

Embrace laziness as a way of life. Critics telling you’re a bum or what?Ignore them. Most of them are just mindless workaholics who are unsure of what they are doing. Being busy their whole life and feeling important about it.

Rather, get inspired. And the best way to be inspired ?

Being lazy.

A few nights ago, I had a friend come up to me and asked me on when I plan to get married. It seems like a funny question to me actually because I have never really thought of planning the time you get married. Is it even possible to plan such things when there is like a decade before you would want to really think about it ?

It’s like asking a preschooler what he would want to study in college.

I realized that the culture had make us assume many things. We go to school from a certain age and then we go to college at the age of 18. By the time we are 22/23, we should have our degrees and should be working. By the age of 30, we should be considering marriage and so on.

There is this make-believe situation where we believe that we should do certain things at certain ages of our lives. It seems almost like a standard practice that most don’t take the time to think why they are doing it.

It’s like,” OK. I’m 18 now. What should I be doing ? Oh ya. Society thinks I should be going to college.”

And off he goes to college.

There is always this idea of when we should do certain things in our lives.

I have no idea when the time is right to:

  • Get a college education
  • Get a girlfriend
  • Get married
  • Have children
  • Travel
  • Start a business

and the list goes on.

There is never a right time. What’s more important is whether your heart feels right.
